Oysters have long been part of Virginia’s coastal heritage — symbols of community, celebration, and sustainability. What many people don’t realize is that oyster shells are more than just leftovers from a great seafood platter; they are vital building blocks for new oyster reefs.
By recycling our oyster shells, we help create habitats for baby oysters (called spat) to attach and grow, strengthening the Bay’s ecosystem and improving water quality.
