Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary
1440 Wilson Landing Road, Nanjemoy, MD 20662
Website: sanctuaries.noaa.gov/mallows-potomac
Description:
Managed jointly by NOAA, the State of Maryland, and Charles County, the Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary protects an 18-square-mile stretch of the tidal Potomac River rich in cultural and ecological treasures. The sanctuary is most famous for its World War I "Ghost Fleet," the largest collection of historic shipwrecks in the Western Hemisphere, featuring the remnants of over 100 wooden steamships. Over the past century, these hulls have evolved into thriving "life islands" that support diverse ecosystems of fish, eagles, and ospreys. The sanctuary also honors 12,000 years of history, including Indigenous heritage, Civil War landmarks, and historic commercial fisheries. Accessible via Mallows Bay Park, it offers a boat ramp, a fishing pier, hiking trails, and world-class kayaking opportunities.
