What 571 Osprey Nests Tell Us About the Chesapeake Bay

If you've spent any time along the shoreline in Colonial Beach, you've probably looked up and seen an osprey carrying a fish back to its nest. Maybe you've watched one hover over Monroe Bay before plunging into the water, or heard its unmistakable whistle echo across the Potomac. For many of us, summer wouldn't feel like summer without these iconic raptors.
That's why new research from the Center for Conservation Biology is both fascinating and concerning.

Researchers monitored 571 osprey nests throughout the Chesapeake Bay during the 2024 breeding season. They discovered a troubling pattern: ospreys nesting in the Bay's saltier waters are struggling to raise young at levels needed to sustain healthy populations. While birds nesting in inland rivers like the James and Rappahannock are generally doing well, many pairs in the lower Bay are producing fewer than one young per nest.
Even more alarming is that this wasn't always the case.
Many of these same nesting areas were studied in the 1980s, when ospreys successfully raised enough young to maintain thriving populations. Today, many adults either never attempt to breed or lose young before they are old enough to leave the nest.
So, what changed?
The evidence points to something surprisingly simple: FOOD.
Ospreys are fish specialists, and throughout much of the Chesapeake, they have historically depended on Atlantic menhaden, which is a small, silvery fish that fuels everything from striped bass and bluefish to whales and seabirds. Rich in oils and energy, menhaden are the perfect food for hungry ospreys.
Over the past several decades, however, researchers have documented dramatic declines in menhaden deliveries to osprey nests. Adults are still working hard, but many are returning with fewer fish or less nutritious prey. The result is a heartbreaking scene repeated across the Bay: nestlings competing for limited food, the youngest often failing to survive, and nests that once fledged three healthy young now producing only one, or none at all.
Scientists carefully examined other possible causes, including predators, bald eagles, contaminants, nest competition, and weather. While each can affect individual nests, none explain the widespread reproductive declines seen throughout the Chesapeake's high-salinity waters.
For communities like Colonial Beach, this research hits close to home.
The osprey is more than a beautiful bird or a favorite subject for photographers. It is one of the Chesapeake Bay's best indicators of ecosystem health. When ospreys thrive, it tells us that the Bay is producing enough fish to support wildlife from the bottom of the food web to the very top. When they struggle, they remind us that something beneath the surface deserves our attention.
There is also reason for hope.
We've seen this story before. Ospreys nearly disappeared from the Chesapeake during the DDT era, but science, conservation, and public support brought them back. Their recovery became one of America's greatest environmental success stories.
Today, these remarkable raptors are once again telling us something important.
Every osprey soaring over Colonial Beach, every nest built on a platform, and every nestling peering over the edge is part of a much bigger story about the health of our rivers, our fisheries, and the Chesapeake Bay we all cherish.
If we continue listening to what the ospreys are telling us, we have another opportunity to protect not only an iconic bird, but the entire ecosystem that makes life along the Bay so special.
